It was originally a Roman necropolis, with tombs lining the road leading up to the city. As Romans had a social need to be recognized during and after their lives, the streets around Roman cities provided the ultimate way both to be on display to travelers as busts after their deaths, and to adhere to the strict laws about being buried outside of the city limits. Today,
