It's native to the Yucatan Peninsula and Chiapas in southern Mexico, as well as Guatemala. This cucurbit is an endemic from the yucatan tip. The taste is sweet as sugar and a bit milky but it must be perfectly ripe to eat. Excisus grows a large tuber to go dormant and will regrow each year. The root should be kept dry during cold weather.
